As a BC undergrad, Patrick Downes ’05 ran the Boston Marathon. He met Jessica Kensky in 2006, and they were married in 2012. A few months later in 2013, their lives changed when they sustained serious injuries during the marathon.
Despite a challenging healing process, Patrick and Jessica have spent their time supporting others impacted by traumatic injuries and advocating for better resources and healthcare for amputees. They also inspired the class of 2005 and the wider BC community to create the BC Strong Scholarship, which provides financial aid to students with permanent disabilities.
Our Boston College family is filled with #EaglesForOthers. In tough moments, please remember that we are a community that cares, and we are not alone. Share your #EaglesForOthers story today at the link in bio or at bit.ly/bccaringpatrick to help spread the feeling of connection.

To start, meet Liz McCartney ’94. When Hurricane Katrina descended on New Orleans in 2005, Liz was running a learning program for disadvantaged kids and didn’t have the first idea of how to rebuild after a natural disaster. What she did have, as she saw the tragic aftermath of the city’s flooding, was a desire to help however she could.
Liz and her boyfriend Zack raised $10,000 from their parents’ friends, moved to New Orleans in 2006, and set about trying. From those humble origins was born SBP (short for St. Bernard Project), now a national nonprofit that rebuilds after natural disasters all across the country. Read the rest of Liz’s story of caring at the link in bio or at bit.ly/bccaringliz.
Do you know of other Eagles who are doing amazing things for their communities? Submit your #EaglesForOthers story today at the link in bio. Help us share inspiration from across our BC community. Together, on this Day of Caring, we can help remind the world how unity and hope can make a difference.

During this challenging time, let's focus on community and what it means to be an Eagle, and remember that our BC family is strong in both good times and difficult ones.
And so today we announce a Day of Caring. Throughout the day we will tell stories that reveal the many ways in which our alumni, students, faculty, parents, and friends serve and demonstrate care for others in the community.
Help us show the world what it means to be BC #EaglesForOthers. Please share your story about caring for others or nominate people you know who represent this value at the link in bio or at bit.ly/bccaringday. You can also post your story of service on Twitter or Instagram and use the hashtag #EaglesForOthers.

James Breen ’17 and his dad Mike Breen ’78 made sure to wear their BC shirts when they reached the top of Zekova Glava, 7000 feet up in the Bjelasica mountain range in Montenegro - a trip that few Americans take but these Eagles conquered.
